‘The history of electronic music is full of references to the ocean. It has not only been inspiring due to its vast and unpredictable nature, but also because synthesiser music is rooted in the manipulation of ‘waveforms’, which has always provided a strong affinity for electronic composers. I am delighted to present ‘Plain Sailing’ for Swenson, a mixtape blending pieces of music which directly reference the ocean, the sea, and water. It opens and closes with extracts from ‘Environments : The Psychologically Ultimate Seashore’, a seminal ‘field recording’ published in 1970 by Syntonic Research Inc. ; it merges tracks by Suzanne Ciani, Brian Eno
and Ryuichi Sakamoto, amongst many others.’
